Swedish electric carmaker Polestar has once again delivered on its commitment to publish the full carbon footprint of every vehicle in its lineup, and says the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of its Polestar 5 four-door GT measured in at 23.8 tonnes of CO2-equivalent.

Polestar is the first original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to publish the full carbon footprint of every vehicle in its lineup, part of the company’s efforts to provide customers with greater transparency about the climate impact of the cars that they drive.

The Polestar 5 four-door GT – soon to be released in Australia – boasts a range of up to 678 kilometres (WLTP) and, in its dual-motor variant, up to 650kW of power and acceleration from 0-100km/h of just 3.2 seconds.

But it’s the car’s manufacturing process in the spotlight here, boasting a cradle-to-grave carbon footprint of 23.8 tonnes of CO2-equivalent (tCO2e).

According to Polestar’s analysis, 60 per cent of the cradle-to-gate climate impact is due to the materials used in the vehicle’s production, which excludes the battery modules. A smidge over 50 per cent of the materials emissions comes from aluminium, with steel and iron accounting for another 17 per cent.

The lithium-ion battery modules accounted for 29 per cent of a single car’s emissions, with logistics (10 per cent) and manufacturing rounding out the list.

In Polestar’s estimation, the climate impact of the battery is relatively low due to the use of 100 per cent renewable electricity in the production of the anode and cathode active materials and in the cell production of the battery modules.

Importantly, to account for the huge impact aluminium has on the car’s emissions during production, 13 per cent of the aluminium used is recycled and 83 per cent comes from smelters powered by renewable electricity.

As a result, Polestar has been able to avoid 14 tCO2e per car compared with conventional aluminium sourcing.

Other emissions savings were made with the use of innovative materials in the car’s interior, such as natural fibre composites and recycled materials.

The full vehicle life cycle, which includes cradle-to-gate and then a further 200,000 kilometres driving plus end-of-life treatment, works out to 28.5 tCO₂e using the European electricity mix, but skyrockets to 38.6 tCO2e if manufacturing were to rely on the global electricity mix.

“You cannot reduce what you don’t measure,” said Fredrika Klarén, head of sustainability at Polestar.

“Making the carbon footprint of a car visible helps focus the industry on where emissions occur, particularly in materials and manufacturing. That transparency is essential if we want to scale the low-carbon materials, renewable energy and circular solutions needed to reduce the climate impact of cars.”

The full Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) for the Polestar 5, available in full here, is based on the 2026 model year, the car’s first model year, and has been critically reviewed by British engineering services firm Ricardo.

The Polestar 5 is currently available in Australia with a hefty price tag in excess of $185,000, and up to nearly $210,000 for the Performance – Launch edition.

The National Hot Rod Association has a straightforward rule for street-legal production cars running at sanctioned drag events without roll cages or competition licenses. Go no quicker than 9.0 seconds in the quarter mile and no faster than 150 mph through the traps. It’s a relatively sensible threshold designed to keep ordinary drivers in non-caged cars from getting themselves into too much trouble. The 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X, which starts at $212,195 and can be bought at a Chevy dealership, does not care about sensible thresholds.

A Machine Built to Break Records, And Rules

The ZR1X combines the ZR1’s twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter LT7 V8 with an upgraded front electric motor lifted from the Corvette E-Ray platform. The combustion engine contributes 1,064 horsepower while the front electric motor adds another 186 horsepower, bringing the total to 1,250 horsepower in an all-wheel-drive layout that tips the scales at 4,139 pounds. 

On a prepped surface at US 131 Motorsports Park in Michigan, Chevrolet’s own test produced a quarter-mile time of 8.675 seconds at 159.57 mph, with the car reaching 60 mph in just 1.68 seconds while generating a peak of 1.75g of acceleration force. Those are numbers that belong on a purpose-built race car, not something with a factory warranty.

Where the Rulebook Falls Apart

The NHRA’s Street Legal program’s 9.0-second and 150 mph limits exist for a reason. At those speeds, without a roll cage protecting the occupant, a crash becomes extremely difficult to survive. The rules were never written with a car like the ZR1X in mind, because a car like the ZR1X was not supposed to exist at a dealership. Even on road tires on an unprepared track, Car and Driver recorded 9.2 seconds at 155 mph, a pass that still violates speed thresholds, and raises the point of what a prepped track and competition tires will lead to.

The Paradox of a Street Car That Outgrew the Strip

What makes this situation genuinely strange is that the ZR1X is not a stripped-out track weapon. It runs on pump gas, it has a trunk, and it is 50-state street legal. The engineering team even had to modify the front motor’s software cutoff point, raising it from 150 mph to 160 mph, just so the all-wheel-drive system would remain engaged through the entire length of a quarter-mile run.

General Motors did not stumble into this territory accidentally. The ZR1X was designed from the outset to be the fastest production vehicle the company had ever built, and it achieved that goal so thoroughly that the sport which celebrates straight-line speed now has no legal category to put it in. The NHRA will almost certainly adapt its regulations to accommodate a car of this profile. Until then, the quickest Corvette ever built sits in an uncomfortable grey area.

Audi has finally revealed the new RS5. It comes in both wagon/estate and sedan body styles, blending sportiness with everyday comfort and practicality.

The new Audi RS5 promises motorsport levels of performance from its improved 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 engine. It is paired with a 174 hp electric motor integrated into the hybridized 8-speed automatic gearbox, for a combined output of 630 hp and 609 lb-ft of torque.

The internal combustion engine alone delivers 503 hp, almost 60 hp more than before. The engine uses a modified Miller cycle that offers significant advantages under partial load. It is equipped with two variable-geometry turbochargers. The various modifications have not only boosted performance but also improved the fuel efficiency by 20% under high loads.

The plug-in hybrid system includes a 25.9 kWh battery pack that gives the RS5 an all-electric range of up to 54 miles.

In terms of performance, Audi claims, the new RS5 can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 3.6 seconds, thanks to the Quattro all-wheel-drive system with Dynamic Torque Control.

The Audi RS5 comes with RS-specific front and rear axles, sport suspension and RS-tuned steering. The car rides on 20-inch and 21-inch wheels in the front and rear, respectively and comes with optional ceramic brakes.

The car looks sporty and muscular. It features the Singleframe grille flanked by pixel LED headlamps and massive vents on the front bumper. In the rear, the RS5 gets an aggressive rear diffuser with twin oval exhausts, sleek pixel LED DRLs and slim taillights connected by a light bar.

Inside, you get a massive central touchscreen, a digital cockpit and body-hugging bucket seats with RS logos. It has a sporty steering wheel wrapped in Alcantara with a red button marked ‘Boost’.
