Finding a free charging station in your area takes a little research. Many grocery stores, hotels, universities, and car dealers offer no-cost charging, but they aren’t widely advertised and might not show up in the location features built into many electric vehicles’ navigation systems.

Smartphone apps are a great way to locate free charging stations. PlugShare, available for Apple and Android devices, is one of the more popular options. Its map-based search tool offers a filter for no-cost chargers in your area, and you can expand your search radius to find additional locations. 

It’s also a good idea to download the apps for the charging networks you most frequently use for the times when there are no free chargers available where you need them. Many of the major national charging companies offer perks, such as points systems that give free charging minutes, and they’re useful for viewing the status of local chargers. 

Some EV owners may have access to free charging time through promotional offers issued when they bought their cars. Electrify America’s network offers free charging to some owners of EVs from brands such as Audi, BMW, Genesis, and others. That said, the free charging sessions are usually limited, depending on the charger speed and vehicle. For example, owners of 2025 Hyundai Ioniq 6 models purchased before February 28, 2025, have access to 24 months of 30-minute fast-charging sessions or 60 minutes of Level 2 charging.

Be Courteous

Only occupy a stall while you’re actively charging, and move your vehicle as soon as it’s done. Many sites enforce a 2–4 hour limit, and other EV drivers are often waiting.

Trend

As EV adoption climbs, more networks that started as free perks are switching to paid plans. Expect free public charging to become harder to find from year to year.

Lines for free charging stations might also be an issue, or there may not be empty chargers when you arrive at a destination and need to plug in.

If you’re going to drive in an unfamiliar area and know you’ll be near the maximum range of your EV, be sure to have a backup plan in case your intended free electric car charger is unavailable.

The easiest places to find free charging stations are shopping malls, high-traffic grocery stores, libraries, and some fast-food chains. Some towns operate free charging networks as part of clean energy initiatives or to drive traffic to areas they want to promote. The best way to locate these chargers is to use apps like PlugShare, which makes it easy to filter for free chargers on a map.

If you were one of the early EV adopters, your vehicle might have come with free charging perks, though the limited clock is running out on most of those offers by now. Those benefits are usually tied to a specific charging network, and they may require an app with an attached payment method. You can locate these chargers in the charging network app or your vehicle’s companion app.

Finally, remember that free charging can be a huge benefit, but it’s generally not a good idea to wait until you’re in a desperate situation. Finding a free charger can take time, and they aren’t always in the most convenient locations. You’ll probably also find slower speeds that make it difficult to top up your battery in a reasonable amount of time.

EVs might be getting uber-fast at charging, but there’s still one refueling method in China that makes plugging in feel as archaic as feeding your horse some oats. We’re talking about Nio’s battery swapping tech. Pull in, wait about three minutes, and leave with a fully-charged pack. It’s kind of like going to a car wash, but it gives your car a fresh battery instead of making it squeaky clean.

How popular is it getting, you ask? Well, Nio’s recent statistics point out that during China’s recent May Day travel rush, it completed over 1 million battery swaps in a single week.

Nio was able to perform 1,031,469 separate battery-swapping sessions between April 30 and May 6—or about 147,350 swaps per day. That’s an average of 270 swaps across its 3,839 battery swapping stations, or right around 40 per-site, per-day.

The actual highest day of use was May 1 where Nio swapped out 170,585 batteries. This was a huge number of swaps, but still didn’t quite beat the automaker’s record of 177,627 in a single day (which Nio says was set on February 22nd during the height of China’s Spring Festival travel rush).

Even more impressive was the amount of power delivered via the stations. From May 1 until May 5, Nio says that it provided 15.4 gigawatt-hours of energy, which it claims was around 16.3% of all energy delivered to EVs in China over the same period of time. 



Battery swapping has several notable advantages over charging. One is speed. While even the quickest charging stop in the U.S. takes around 20 minutes, and most EVs require more like 30-40, an automated battery-pack swap can take just a few minutes. The batteries are charged slowly on site, reducing the location’s power needs. And the framework enables different battery packs for different use cases. For example, when they embark on a road trip, Nio owners can pay extra for a bigger pack with more range. 

As cool as it is, battery swapping does come with some unique challenges. Automakers have to invest in a bunch of spare batteries to store at the site. And interoperability is an issue; Nio’s stations only work with its Nio and Onvo brands. For this to take off industry-wide and become the new default form of EV charging, you’d need to have battery packs that were swappable between manufacturers. (Nio is working with Chinese battery giant CATL on battery-swapping standards.)

In the U.S., the tech has been in its infancy for years. A California-based startup, Ample, had been piloting battery-swapping for ride-hailing drivers and had inked some preliminary deals with automakers, but it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy late last year. 

Nio, meanwhile, is pushing ahead. And its swapping stations have proved popular. In fact, Nio has performed more than 100 million battery swaps since 2018.The automaker’s fifth-generation battery swapping facilities will soon begin deployment across China, allowing the stations to support larger wheelbases and help to future proof the tech.

Before hitting the road on long trips, EV drivers should map out charging stops along their routes. Whether you’re an EV owner planning a trip or a potential EV buyer exploring charging options, we’re here to help.

You’ll find many public charging options, but downloading a few charging-network apps can give you more flexibility on the road. EVs use different charging connectors and may require adapters at some stations, but many newer EVs are adopting the North American Charging System (NACS). Before you start looking for charging stations, it helps to understand your EV’s charging port and adapter options.

The best and most convenient place to charge is often your home. If you have the means, we highly recommend installing an at-home charger to save time and money. If this isn’t an option for you, there are plenty of public charging stations, so there’s no need to worry. As EVs have become more common, more charging stations are popping up across the United States, both as standalone EV stations and at traditional gas stations.

Home Charging

The easiest and best place to charge your electric car is at home. It’ll save you time and money and can provide peace of mind. Some studies show that about 80% of EV owners charge their cars at home, making it a popular choice. Many states, cities, municipalities, and electric utility companies also offer rebates and incentives for home charging. If you live in an apartment complex, try checking in with the leasing office or property manager. An EV charger might be available as an amenity.

Most households will have either a Level 1 or Level 2 charger. Level 1 is the slowest and is best for owners who don’t drive often or who can recharge overnight from a standard outlet. Level 2 charging is faster and typically uses a 240-volt circuit, similar to what many electric clothes dryers use.

Workplace Charging

Many companies have installed charging stations for employees to use while at the office. These chargers tend to be Level 2 chargers, which give your car a faster charge in fewer hours than Level 1 charging. Taking advantage of workplace charging can save you time and money, but remember charging etiquette: Move your car when it’s done charging and share access with co-workers.

Public Charging

A charging station might seem intimidating if it’s your first time charging an EV, as they can sometimes be unreliable, charge at different speeds, or require different apps or payment methods. You’ll occasionally find broken chargers or another EV occupying a spot longer than necessary, but many public charging stations are conveniently located in places where you run errands.

Public charging stations usually have Level 2 chargers or DC fast chargers, sometimes called Level 3 chargers. DC fast chargers deliver the most energy to your car in the shortest time. These chargers are great for long drives or when you need a quick charge to get home. Many EVs can DC fast-charge to about 80% in under an hour, and some can do it in roughly 15–30 minutes under ideal conditions.

Keep in mind that while DC fast chargers are great in certain scenarios, they should not be your go-to for everyday use. Frequent DC fast charging may accelerate battery degradation compared to slower AC charging, especially in heat or at high states of charge. For everyday charging, many automakers recommend limiting the charge to around 80% when a full charge isn’t needed.

What About Tesla/NACS Charging?

Fortunately for Tesla owners, the company has a large and generally reliable Supercharger network for charging away from home. Tesla’s connector design is now standardized as SAE J3400 and is commonly known as NACS. Many automakers have announced plans to adopt NACS/J3400 on North American EVs, especially for 2025 and newer models, but availability varies by brand and model year.

Until recently, most non-Tesla EVs in North America used CCS for DC fast charging. Some CCS-equipped EVs can now access select Tesla Superchargers using an automaker-approved NACS DC adapter, but compatibility depends on the vehicle, software support, adapter, and Supercharger site. Tesla vehicles can also use many non-Tesla public chargers with the appropriate adapter.

Many people ask the single biggest question about electric cars: What will I spend to charge the EV?

If you’re looking at an electric car versus a gas car, doing some upfront research on charging compared with gas costs will help you make an informed decision. Remember that some new EVs come with a limited amount of free charging at public stations, and charging networks typically offer subscription plans that help reduce charging fees for EV drivers who frequently use them.

To answer the question of cost, we enlisted the help of John Voelcker, a longtime automotive journalist and industry analyst specializing in electric vehicles. He’s heard every argument made for (and against) electric vehicle ownership, including recharging costs compared to traditional refueling.

You Need to Do Some Math

Don’t sweat it. The math involved is pretty simple. It helps to have a recent electric bill for the most accurate estimate. You’ll want to calculate the amount you pay for electricity in a given month. Then, we’ll provide examples so you can determine how much you spend on each kilowatt-hour (kWh) of electricity used.

“For home charging, find your electric bill, then divide the [number] of kilowatt-hours you used into the bottom-line dollar total. That’ll give you the price you paid per kWh,” Voelcker explains.

According to the United States Energy Information Administration, U.S. households paid an average of 17.98 cents per kWh in September 2025, the most recent figures available at the time of this writing.

Let’s apply this rate to a typical electric car. This example does not take into consideration any discounts provided by your utility.

What Is the Cost to Charge an EV in kWh?

“A conservative rule of thumb is that an electric car gets three to four miles per kWh,” Voelcker says. “So divide the total miles you drive each month by three to get the kWh you would use monthly. Multiply that number by your cost per kWh. The dollar amount you get will most likely be lower than what you pay each month to buy gasoline.”

To put this into perspective, let’s give an example. Suppose you drive about 1,015 miles per month (Americans go an average of about 12,200 miles annually). For an EV, you will use about 338 kWh in that time frame. Using the most recent U.S. household average estimate of 17.98 cents per kWh, charging an electric car at home would cost about $60.77 per month. Using a DC fast charger at a public charging station when away from home, an EV driver might pay 50 cents per kWh, or $169 for that much energy.

Is EV Charging Cheaper Than Gas?

According to AAA, the average price of gas currently hovers around $2.86 per gallon. So, filling a 12-gallon gas tank currently costs about $34.32. Things get a little tricky because, as we all know, cars and trucks use vastly different amounts of fuel.

Let’s say you’re driving a car that brings a combined average of 30 mpg during a mix of city and highway driving. Using that same 12-gallon tank as a reference point, you’ll have 360 miles of driving range for each fill-up. If you’re driving the national average of 1,015 miles per month, you’ll need to refuel about three times each month and spend about $102.96 ($34.32 x 3) for gas, compared to $60.77 for charging an EV at home in the example above.

Again, this is only an estimate since gas prices and fuel efficiency vary. Few cars and SUVs come close to delivering a 30 mpg combined average, so our fairly conservative number-crunching in this scenario makes it clear that recharging will cost less than refueling a car. The financial gap narrows with a more fuel-efficient vehicle, but it remains.

Costs of Charging an EV at Home

Electricity rates are subject to many factors, including the region where you live, the time of year, and even the time of day when peak charges apply. For the most part, electricity usage and costs are at their lowest late at night. That’s good news for anyone considering an EV, according to Voelcker.

“While shoppers worry about access to public charging stations, they need to know that as much as 90% of electric car charging is done overnight at home,” Voelcker said. “The cheapest way to charge your electric car is almost always at home, overnight. Some utilities have special low rates for the overnight period when their demand is lightest.”

Where you live directly impacts your electric bill. People in Vermont pay an average of almost 25 cents per kWh of energy use, twice the cost in Idaho (an average of 12.46 cents per kWh in October).

The chart above uses October 2025 average electricity rates from the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The EV battery sizes are based on the usable capacity reported by the Electric Vehicle Database and rounded to the nearest whole number. Examples are the Nissan Leaf (39 kWh), Ford Mustang Mach-E (73 kWh), and Polestar 3 Long Range (107 kWh). Charging cost is estimated by multiplying the state’s average electricity cost by the EVs’ usable battery capacity.

The Cost of Level 2 and Faster Charging

When talking about public Level 2 charging and Level 3 fast-charging systems, the prices are more complex to narrow down when compared to standard at-home costs. That’s because charging networks vary in price, not to mention availability around the country.

Many EV owners choose to install a Level 2 charger in their garage. The cost isn’t cheap. About $2,000 for parts and installation is a reasonable ballpark figure before any discounts or incentives. Moving up to Level 2 means you’ll cut your charging time sometimes by half. And it can potentially add value to your home.

“Every electric car (Tesla included) can use public Level 2 stations,” says Voelcker, “but Nissan Leaf [models] use one fast-charging standard (called CHAdeMO) while every other EV uses a different fast-charging standard called CCS.”

Additional electric carmakers and charging networks have started to adopt Tesla’s proprietary NACS charge port, with many debuting it for the 2025 model year. Check for rebates and incentives from your state, local municipality, and utility company for installing home chargers, which helps lower costs further.

Finding the Right Plug to Charge an EV

Voelcker explains the difference sounds more complex than it is. “The vast majority of fast-charging locations have both kinds, with a different cable on each side of the station. It’s like the same gas pump could dispense both regular gasoline and diesel fuel from different hoses.”

As for the price, a 240-volt (Level 2) recharge could cost you anywhere from zero dollars to a fixed hourly rate or the price of the electricity transferred to the EV. Charging networks often provide membership programs to minimize your recharge cost, which is especially useful if you can’t regularly charge your vehicle at home.

The Electrify America network determines pricing for DC fast chargers by location, your plan, and the maximum power level your vehicle can accept. For example, to use a DC fast charger at an Atlanta-area local grocery location, the Electrify America Pass Pricing costs 64 cents per kWh. Other popular charging networks include ChargePoint and EVgo.

[Pro Tip: Be mindful of time-of-day cost differences at public charging stations. An EVgo location near me charges 39 cents per kWh between midnight and 5 a.m. The rate jumps to 58 cents from 5 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 6 p.m. to midnight. Users pay 60 cents per kWh to charge during the peak hours between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. — Chris Hardesty, senior advice editor]

Like many charging networks on the PlugShare app, users can find charging stations, leave reviews, and provide charging tips to other EV drivers. Tips include whether or not the charging station is in use and if it’s working properly.

The Faster the Charging, the Higher the Rate

Unlike a typical 240-volt Level 2 home charger system, you will find Level 3 chargers in commercial settings because they’re prohibitively expensive for a private individual to install at home.

Tesla uses its dedicated Supercharger network, which has more than 2,500 U.S. locations with around 30,000 charging ports. Rates can vary widely depending on region, timing, the Tesla model or other vehicle you’re charging, and if you have a Tesla membership. One important caveat: Select Tesla Superchargers now work for some non-Tesla vehicles. In 2023, the Supercharger network began opening select locations to Tesla and NACS-enabled vehicles with CCS compatibility.

Voelcker stresses that home charging is the best option for anyone considering an electric car. Yet, equally important is knowing where to find EV perks close to home.

“Some workplaces offer charging for employees’ cars … But electric-car owners quickly learn which public stations near them are free, which charge for charging, and how much they cost,” he said.

For example, a bustling parking lot in a crowded city center might lure EV owners with the promise of free electric car charging. But the resultant fee for parking there could easily zoom past what you’d have paid to fill up even the thirstiest gas-powered car or truck. Still, drivers will find the network of chargers growing with plenty of free options, including at malls, hotels, grocery stores, and more.

Voelcker’s final advice to EV owners: “Always ask before plugging in!”
