The next chapter of the Bentley Bentayga is shaping up to be a decisive one. Slated for a 2028 debut, the new model of the luxury SUV won’t go fully electric as once planned. Instead, it will be a high-performance PHEV.

Originally intended to be based on the Volkswagen Group’s advanced SSP architecture, delays (largely tied to Porsche pushing its ‘61’ platform into the next decade) forced Bentley to rethink its strategy. Hence, the new Bentayga will use the PPC platform, shared with the latest Porsche Cayenne and upcoming Audi Q9.

Bentley Bentayga V8 Design Series

The 2028 Bentley Bentayga is expected to feature a sophisticated plug-in hybrid setup built around a 3.0-litre V6 engine, delivering performance similar to today’s 456 bhp Bentayga PHEV but with an improved electric-only range.

Design cues will draw heavily from the EXP 15 concept, hinting at a sharper, more progressive styling. Other advanced features that would be offered in the new PHEV luxury SUV include air suspension, active ride control, and next-gen driver aids.

Chinese MIIT reveals the new XPeng Mona L03 ahead of its debut https://engineicon.com/chinese-miit-reveals-the-new-xpeng-mona-l03-ahead-of-its-debut/ Sat, 11 Apr 2026 01:48:35 +0000 https://engineicon.com/chinese-miit-reveals-the-new-xpeng-mona-l03-ahead-of-its-debut/

On April 9, 2026, the public got its first real look at the new XPeng Mona L03. This is the first SUV to join the Mona family – XPeng’s dedicated brand for buyers who want a great car without spending a fortune. The Mona L03 is a five-seat vehicle that takes the sporty style and mixes it with the space of a family SUV. XPeng is hoping this model will be just as successful as their first Mona car, the M03 sedan.

If you look at the Mona L03, you will notice it has a coupe-like design, which means the roof slopes down toward the back like a sports car. The front of the car has “T” shaped headlights that make it look modern and maybe even a little bit angry. It has semi-hidden door handles and a front bumper with an active grille to help it with air resistance.

The Mona L03 is a mid-sized SUV. XPeng filed paperwork for two different versions of the car – one version is 183.1 inches long, and the other is 183.9 inches long – the difference is due to different bumper designs. Both versions are 75.6 inches wide and 63 inches tall. The car has a wheelbase of 112.2 inches. The car weighs about 4,090 lb – nothing unusual for an EV since batteries are quite heavy.

The wheels on the Mona L03 also come in two sizes. You can get 18-inch wheels with 225/60 R18 tires or larger 20-inch wheels with 245/45 R20 tires. The bigger wheels look cooler, but they might make the ride a little bumpier and will affect the range. XPeng also listed technical measurements for the overhangs – they range between 35 inches and 36.4 inches depending on which version of the car you are looking at.

Most electric cars in this price range use one motor, and the Mona L03 is no different. It uses a single electric motor made by Luxshare Precision Technology. The motor has a peak power of 183 kW. That is actually more power than the Mona sedan has. If you have a heavy foot, the Mona L03 can reach a top speed of 112 mph.

The battery inside the car is an LFP pack – Lithium Iron Phosphate. These batteries are popular because they usually last a long time and are safer than other types. The batteries are supplied by CALB – interestingly, XPeng did not use the “blade” batteries from BYD for this model, even though they use them in the sedan version. We do not know the exact capacity of the battery yet, but we expect it to provide plenty of range for daily driving.

XPeng loves technology, and the Mona L03 is packed with it. The car is covered in cameras. There are cameras on the front, the back, the mirrors, and even on the sides near the front wheels. These cameras are the “eyes” of the car. They help with driver-assistance features, which keep the car in its lane or even help with driving in busy cities. XPeng is sticking with a system that uses cameras instead of expensive LiDAR sensors and is using its own Turing AI chips.

Inside, passengers can look up through a large panoramic glass roof. It makes the cabin feel big and bright. For people who like to customize their cars, XPeng is offering a lot of options. You can choose different brake calipers, add a rear spoiler or even change the trim on the bumpers.

The Mona L03 is expected to be priced right in the middle of XPeng’s lineup. We believe it will cost around RMB 150,000, which is about £16,000. For comparison, the smaller Mona M03 sedan starts at RMB 119,800 (£12,700). The bigger XPeng G6 SUV starts at RMB 176,800 (£18,900). By pricing the L03 in the middle, XPeng is targeting families who need more space than a sedan can offer, but don’t want to pay the higher price of the G6.

The timing for this launch is very important. In March 2026, XPeng delivered 27,415 vehicles. While that is a lot of cars, it was actually 17% lower than the year before. The company needs the Mona L03 to be a hit to get their numbers back up. The Mona M03 sedan is a huge success, selling over 175,000 units in 2025 alone.

But XPeng isn’t just thinking about China. The CEO, He Xiaopeng, has said he wants to bring the Mona brand to Europe and other parts of the world later in 2026. This means we might see the Mona L03 on roads far away from its home very soon. As the second model in the Mona line, it has big shoes to fill, but if it can match the popularity of the M03 sedan, XPeng will have a very busy year.

Lamborghini Revuelto Miura Edition may debut in August https://engineicon.com/lamborghini-revuelto-miura-edition-may-debut-in-august/ Mon, 06 Apr 2026 02:17:54 +0000 https://engineicon.com/lamborghini-revuelto-miura-edition-may-debut-in-august/

Lamborghini has four new models planned for 2026. We will witness the rollout of cars at regular intervals starting in May. Today, we are going to talk about a special edition, which is likely to be revealed at Pebble Beach in August.

We’ve heard that Lamborghini is planning a Miura homage similar to the Aventador Miura Edition from 10 years ago. This time, it will be based on the Revuelto, obviously.

Lamborghini Aventador Miura Edition-1

The new Revuelto Miura Edition might feature a two-tone exterior just like the Miura. Besides, we might see a few other unique design bits inspired by the original. The interior might feature some retro elements with special upholstery and special edition badges.

Rumours suggest that Lamborghini plans to build 60 examples of the Revuelto Miura Edition. It is expected to be priced higher than the standard Revuelto.

But that’s not the only car that will be presented in August. Another special Revuelto is on the cards. We shall discuss it in a separate post.

Exclusive! Lamborghini Urus SE Performante likely to debut in April 2026 https://engineicon.com/exclusive-lamborghini-urus-se-performante-likely-to-debut-in-april-2026/ Fri, 13 Mar 2026 00:57:50 +0000 https://engineicon.com/exclusive-lamborghini-urus-se-performante-likely-to-debut-in-april-2026/

Lamborghini is working on a high-performance version of the latest Urus SE. It’s no secret, as the SUV has already been spotted testing multiple times in the recent past. We still don’t know whether it will be called ‘Performante’, but sources tell us that it is likely to be unveiled in April 2026.

The new model will essentially be a sharper, sportier version of the plug-in hybrid Urus. It could receive a slight bump in power, a tweaked suspension setup and other upgrades.

The Urus Performante is expected to feature a more aggressive front bumper, different wheels, a reworked rear bumper and roof spoiler. The interior will be largely similar, except for maybe some tech upgrades.

Currently, the Urus SE comes with a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 engine paired with a plug-in hybrid system. It generates 789 hp @ 6000 rpm and 701 lb-ft @ 1750-5750 rpm.

The Amalfi Spider will feature the shark-nose-style front end with a long hood, muscular fenders and sleek taillights. While the rear decklid will be modified to accommodate the roof mechanism, the rear fascia is likely to remain unchanged. It will also get the same upgraded interior as the coupe.

The Amalfi Spider will be powered by the same 3.9-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which makes 631 hp and 561 lb-ft of torque. It comes paired with an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic. It will be equipped with Ferrari’s new brake-by-wire system, an active rear spoiler and Side Slip Control 6.1.

BYD, Toyota, Tesla notch up the most NVES credits as Mazda, Nissan, Subaru lag behind

23 Feb 2026

THE New Vehicle Efficiency Standard (NVES) Regulator’s first report found Mazda, Nissan and Subaru amassing the largest liabilities for exceeding fleet average tailpipe CO2 emissions targets while BYD, Toyota and Tesla were eligible for the lion’s share of credits.

Covering 58 regulated entities (vehicle importers, suppliers and manufacturers) that entered 620,947 vehicles on the Register of Approved Vehicles (RAV) between 1 July and 31 December 2025, the report found that 40 entities (68 per cent) beat the 2025 emissions target.

If an entity has an Interim Emissions Value (IEV) below zero, it has met or exceeded the target and accrued NVES units for the 2025 reporting period, while entities with an IEV above zero have accrued NVES liabilities for 2025.

During the second half of last year, more than 17.2 million NVES units were generated, which can be traded with entities that did not meet the target or used to offset potential penalties as the NVES target gets tougher each year.

The regulator’s report outlines the average emissions numbers for each vehicle category (Type 1 being cars, SUVs and light off-road vehicles, and Type 2 being utilities, vans, and heavy off-road vehicles), as well as the average performance of covered vehicles.

In the 2025 reporting period, 12 per cent of all covered vehicles had zero tailpipe emissions, with 40 entities supplying vehicles in this category.

Of note, it appears the liabilities of Mazda, Nissan, Subaru and Hyundai vindicate Toyota Australia’s relatively early push toward widespread availability of hybrid technology.

Mazda had 38,465 vehicles recorded on the RAV and accrued 508,517 liabilities, the highest of any car-maker, and more than twice that of second-placed Nissan (215,261).

Subaru also fared poorly with 13,187 vehicles recorded and 139,635 liabilities, while Hyundai, with 39,863 vehicles on the RAV and a compelling new energy model offering, sold sufficient high-emitting models to rack up 84,563 liabilities.

At the other end of the scale, BYD had a combined 39,603 vehicles covered on the RAV and an interim emissions value of -6,282,824, followed by Toyota with 115,504 vehicles and a -2,890,652 IEV score.

Intriguingly, Isuzu Ute Australia finished the first NVES reporting period in the black, despite offering only the diesel-powered D-Max ute and MU-X large SUV, with Ford also staying on the right side of the ledger last year even though the majority of its vehicle sales are Ranger utes and Everest large SUVs.

The results show a net surplus of some 15.9 million NVES units, meaning there is now a market for trading NVES credits – perhaps critical to the survival of those OEMs with an ICE-only or ICE-heavy range, especially as NVES regulations tighten.

Otherwise, those importers have around two years to address the balance of their liabilities by removing the heaviest polluters from their portfolio.

If not, they face an infringement notice and penalty, which will be charged at $50 multiplied by their final emissions value as of February 2028 (doubling to $100 if an entity appeals and loses or fails to pay by the due date).

Type 1 vehicles (which accounted for 71 per cent of the data) averaged 114 grams per kilometre (against a 2025 target of 144g/km and a headline limit of 141g/km), while Type 2 vehicles (the remaining 29 per cent) averaged 199 grams per kilometre (against a targeted 214g/km and a headline limit of 141g/km).

In 2026, the target drops to 117g/km for Type 1 vehicles and 180g/hm for Type 2, tightening each year with a 2029 target of 58g/km (Type 1) and 110g/km (Type 2).

According to the regulator, the 2025 results indicate that the NVES is poised to “support more low-emissions vehicles on Australian roads, contributing to a reduction of CO2 emissions in future years”.

The table below provides information and data on the end of 2025 performance period results for each regulated entity (OEM).

While several entities have their results split across multiple importer names, GoAuto has attempted to reconcile these entities as familiar brand names.

Exclusive! Porsche 911 GT3 Sport Cabriolet to debut in March https://engineicon.com/exclusive-porsche-911-gt3-sport-cabriolet-to-debut-in-march/ Sun, 22 Feb 2026 21:17:24 +0000 https://engineicon.com/exclusive-porsche-911-gt3-sport-cabriolet-to-debut-in-march/

We are likely to witness the unveiling of two new exciting convertibles next month. The Ferrari Amalfi Spider is expected to debut in the first half. The second car will be from Porsche: a 911 GT3 Cabriolet. We’ve been told that the order books will open soon.

The convertible version of the GT3 has been in the works for some time now. It was first spotted in July 2025. The latest rumours suggest that it might be called the 911 GT3 Sport Cabriolet.

Like the Amalfi Spider, the convertible GT3 will also feature a folding soft top and a special aero package comprising vents behind the front wheel arches like that of the GT3 RS and a sporty rear bumper with dual exhausts in the centre. Instead of a fixed rear wing, the convertible version might get a retractable spoiler just like the standard 911 Carrera.

The 911 GT3 Sport Cabrio could use the same 4.0-liter, flat-6 engine. Currently, this engine produces 502 hp, which is sent to the rear wheels via either a 6-speed manual or a 7-speed PDK.

Donkervoort P24 RS leaked ahead of debut; Limited to 150 units https://engineicon.com/donkervoort-p24-rs-leaked-ahead-of-debut-limited-to-150-units/ Sat, 24 Jan 2026 17:31:38 +0000 https://engineicon.com/donkervoort-p24-rs-leaked-ahead-of-debut-limited-to-150-units/

Dutch sports car maker Donkervoort is all set to reveal the P24 RS on January 24. It’s a high-performance version of the P24, which the company claims is “the definitive driver’s car.”

We had first reported on the new Donkervoort P24 RS back in November 2025. We now bring you the first image of car, hours ahead of its official reveal.

As expected, the P24 RS is a more extreme version of the standard P24. It has an aggressive front splitter designed to guide air around the wheels. There are multiple vents along the side skirts and a large wing at the back.

We’ve been told that Donkervoort is targeting a power-to-weight ratio of 1:1. The car is said to weigh around 700 kg and is powered by a V6 engine producing 700 hp.
