A new small electric SUV from MG, called the 4X, featuring the company’s “liquid-solid state battery”, was teased last month by the brand in China.

This model has now been officially launched in the Chinese market, with prices starting at the equivalent  of $A20,500. 

On MG’s parent company’s Weibo page, it said: “The MG 4X is officially launched, with a limited-time subsidised price. Unlock quality travel for the whole family!”.

The company has previously shared multiple images of the SUV, revealing details of the car that could very well head to international markets in the near future.

The outside of the new car shares the design language with the company’s MG4 Urban hatch and MG S5 electric SUV, both of which are available in Australia.

With additional ride height and space in this segment, this could be quite popular with families wanting to go electric for the first time.

The interior also shares a layout with the MG S5, which, of course, was carried over to the MG4 Urban, which launched locally in April 2026.

There is a large screen in the centre, as well as physical buttons for controls underneath the screen. However, the number of physical buttons has been reduced compared to earlier MG electric models, giving the interior a minimal look and ease of use when on the go.

There is also a 10.25-inch screen behind the steering wheel showcasing critical driving information.

The vehicle is longer than the MG4 Urban, coming in at 4.5 metres in length, and g- iven the pricing in China – it is a very compelling feature-packed EV.

This model also comes with a new battery pack, which the company calls a “liquid-solid state battery”, with a capacity of 54 kWh and is expected to deliver up to 510 km of CLTC range, which is likely to be around 400 km on the WLTP cycle.

A larger CATL-supplied battery pack is also available, which bumps the capacity to 64 kWh, adding around 100 km to the car’s range.

The MG 4X comes with a single rear-mounted motor delivering up to 125 kW of power, or a larger 150 kW motor in the top-spec variant. This, of course, is different from the Urban EV hatch, which has a front-wheel drive setup.

The new setup should help this small SUV reach 100 km/h from 0 in around 8 seconds, making it slightly slower than the currently available rear-drive MG4 electric hatchback.

This new MG is now available for sale in China, with exports likely to begin late in 2026. If the price falls below $35,000 in Australia, it could be quite a seller, competing with models such as the BYD Atto 2 or the upcoming GWM Ora 5 and Leapmotor B10.

Xiaomi’s upcoming YU7 GT has just become the world’s fastest production SUV around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, with a lap time of 7:34.931. The record was achieved with Xiaomi chief test driver Ren Zhoucan behind the wheel.

Previously, the record for the fastest production SUV was held by the Audi RS Q8 Performance with a lap time of 7:36.698. The second-best time prior to the YU7 GT taking the crown was achieved by the Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT – 7:38.925.

Xiaomi founder and CEO Lei Jun praised the YU7 GT’s achievement, stressing how the higher center of gravity in SUVs makes posting an ideal time on the famous circuit highly difficult.

Xiaomi will fully unveil the YU7 GT on May 21, but the company has already revealed that it has a dual-motor system delivering 738kW or 990hp. It has carbon-ceramic brake discs and was jointly developed by Chinese and European experts. It has a top speed of 186 mph and a range of up to 438 miles under the optimistic CLTC testing conditions.

The YU7 GT is expected to start at around CNY 400,000 (approximately £42,800 at the current exchange rates). The ‘vanilla’, non-GT YU7 model launched last June starting at CNY 253,500 (£27,100).

Xiaomi has already deployed YU7 GT display vehicles to 268 stores in 82 Chinese cities, and it’s recently introduced the striking Crimson Red colorway.

JAC Motors Australia’s managing director Ahmed Mahmoud has offered a glimpse into the Chinese importer’s potential future local product portfolio, with a ute-based SUV model currently under study and “traditional” SUVs from its global line-up being considered for an Australian launch.

 

Speaking with GoAuto at a preview drive event for the Hunter Plug-in Hybrid ute, Mr Mahmoud explained that while JAC currently only competes in Australia’s ute market, its product roadmap presents opportunities for expansion into other segments.

 

“So, JAC competes at the moment in one segment and our product roadmap affords us the opportunity to compete in multiple segments in the future. Where JAC sits in the order of things will be dependent on how quickly we can bring these new vehicles (with) right-hand drive, (a) five-star ANCAP, what have you, to the Australian market,” he said.

 

When asked what segments JAC may be entering in the future, Mr Mahmoud mentioned a ute-based SUV as well as “traditional” SUV models.

 

“We’ve got some studies being undertaken in the ute-based SUV and the more traditional SUVs that you see out there at the moment as well so we’re currently investigating those opportunities to bring those cars to the market in the not too distant future.”

 

According to Mr Mahmoud, models from JAC’s global portfolio could be on the cards for Australia provided that it makes sense to sell these vehicles in right-hand drive form.

 

“So if you just jump on the JAC Motors website, there are huge amounts of cars. There’s 130 different distributors around the globe that import JAC’s products, but most of those countries are left-hand drive countries and we need right-hand drive models.”

 

“So whilst the platform or the base is available to us, the commercials around whether or not it makes sense for that vehicle to be brought into Australia, that’s the negotiation point with JAC China.”

 

The ute-based SUV model in question is almost certainly the T9-based JAC JS9, images of which have surfaced from overseas markets.

 

It is expected to use the T9’s 2.0-litre turbocharged diesel 4×4 powertrain and accommodate seating for seven.

 

Should this model come to the Australian market it would share the ute-based SUV space with the likes of the Ford Everest and the Isuzu MU-X.

 

While generally not as popular as monocoque-based models, ute-based SUV models are still able to achieve sales success.

 

The Ford Everest is consistently represented among Australia’s best-selling vehicles, while the MU-X made up over 36 per cent of Isuzu’s local sales last year.

 

Further “traditional” SUV models offered by JAC overseas include (but are not limited to) the seven-seat JS8 Pro, the mid-size JS6 (available in petrol and plug-in hybrid guises), and the compact JS4 (available with both petrol and battery electric power).

 

Should it come to Australia, the JS8 Pro could compete in the family SUV space against the likes of the Chery Tiggo 8, Mitsubishi Outlander, and the MG QS.

 

Meanwhile, selling the JS6 and the JS4 locally would allow JAC to compete in Australia’s highly-lucrative mid-size and small SUV segments respectively.

 

Rivals for the JS6 could include the Chery Tiggo 7 (in both petrol and PHEV guises), the BYD Sealion 5 and Sealion 6, and the GWM Haval H6 (also in petrol and PHEV guises.

 

The JS4 could be positioned as a rival to the Chery Tiggo 4 and the Mahindra XUV 3XO while the battery electric e-JS4 could go up against the BYD Atto 2 and the Leapmotor B10.

 

Beyond SUVs, JAC’s overseas line-up includes the battery electric E30X hatchback, the RF8 MPV (available with both petrol power and as a PHEV), the J7 sedan and its e-J7 BEV equivalent among other offerings.

 

However, none of these models have been officially confirmed by JAC for an Australian release.

 

JAC currently sells the diesel-powered T9 ute in Australia, which will soon be joined by its Hunter plug-in hybrid sibling, reservations for which opened recently.

 

The T9 line-up comprises six variants across dual cab and cab-chassis body styles. Australian prices range from $38,990 to $47,079 before on-road costs.

 

As for the Hunter PHEV, from launch the dual cab model will be sold in entry-level Pro and range-topping X spec, with the line-up expanding soon with a cab-chassis variant. While local pricing is yet to be officially confirmed, it will start from “under $50,000” according to JAC.

 

Voyah shared the first photos of a new car known as the “FE.” This vehicle is a coupe SUV, with a sporty shape, but still sitting high off the ground. After we have seen the photos for the first time, we can say it looks a lot like the Xiaomi YU7. This new model will officially go on sale in the middle of 2026, and it is a big step for Voyah as they try to win over more drivers who want fast and smart electric cars.

The car in the photos wears a colorful camouflage wrap to hide its final look. But the wrap has big words printed on it – “896” and “Quad-LiDAR.” These labels tell us a lot about the technology inside. The FE uses a system from Huawei called the Qiankun with 896-line quad-LiDAR. It also uses the Huawei Qiankun ADS 5 suite, a very smart computer system that helps the car drive itself.

Clearly, designers put a lot of work into how air moves around the FE. The car has 10 sets of ducts that go through the body and 18 different vents. It also has two grilles on the front that can open and close. These parts help the car cut through the wind easily. Two vents on the hood push air upward, and other vents near the front fenders stop the air from getting messy around the wheels. This careful design should help the car stay stable at high speeds and use less battery power.

The FE looks very aggressive and sporty. It has a large wing on the back with a hollow middle part to manage airflow. The car sits on big 21-inch wheels, and behind those wheels, you can see large sport calipers. Every part of the outside serves a purpose, from the tiny vents to the large rear spoiler.

According to the company, the FE has a total of 32 sensors that act like extra eyes for the driver. This list includes four LiDAR units that use lasers to see the road. It also has three radars in the front and two in the back. To make sure nothing is missed, Voyah added 11 high-definition cameras and 12 parking radars.

Voyah is a brand owned by Dongfeng, the second-largest car company owned by the Chinese government. Voyah has become very popular lately. Over the last year, the company sold more than 10,000 electric cars every single month. The only exception was February – because of the Lunar New Year holiday, many people in China take a break from shopping.

The FE is not the only car Voyah is working on. The company plans to release several new models soon. One is the Voyah Taishan Ultra, an SUV with an advanced autonomous driving system. The other is Taishan X8 – a large five-seater SUV. Another interesting model is a luxury van called the Everest, expected to cost RMB 500,000, which is about £53,500.

On March 20, Voyah officially joined the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. At the same time, the parent company, Dongfeng Group, is changing how it works to become more efficient. By joining the stock market, Voyah can get more money to build even better EVs in the future.

Lexus is finally getting serious about big electric cars. The luxury brand revealed its first SUV with three rows of seats that runs only on batteries – the Lexus TZ. This new vehicle will compete with other popular EVs like the Rivian R1S and the Volvo EX90. It looks sleek and fits right in with the rest of the Lexus family. A lot of people have been waiting for a luxury electric car that can carry the whole family, and the TZ will fill that spot perfectly when it arrives at dealerships later this year.

The Lexus TZ shares its mechanical parts with the Toyota Highlander BEV. It uses the same dedicated frame built just for electric cars. Buyers can choose between two different battery sizes when they pick their car. The smaller battery is 76.96 kWh, and the larger one is 95.82 kWh. Lexus says the bigger battery will let the car drive about 300 miles on a single charge.

Every version of the 2027 Lexus TZ comes with the all-wheel drive DIRECT4 system. It helps the car stay steady when turning corners and helps it speed up quickly from a stop. The electric motors produce a total of 420 horsepower – more than enough for a family hauler. It should make the SUV feel fast even when it is full of people and gear. Drivers can also pick from different modes like Sport, Eco, or Range to change how the car feels on the road. There is even a “Rear Comfort” mode to keep the kids in the back from bouncing around too much.

While the power is good, the towing capacity is a bit lower than some people might expect from a large SUV. The Lexus TZ can pull a trailer weighing up to 3,501 lb. If you look at its rivals, the Hyundai IONIQ 9 can tow up to 5,000 lb. That is a big difference if you need to pull a heavy boat or a large trailer. It seems Lexus focused more on luxury and smooth driving than on heavy lifting. Still, 3,501 lb is enough for a small camper or a couple of jet skis for a weekend at the lake.

Lexus spent a lot of time making the inside of the TZ feel like a plush living room. They call the interior design a “Driving Lounge.” The goal is to make everyone feel relaxed, even the people sitting in the very back row. The car uses new materials to block out wind and tire noise. Lexus claims this is the quietest SUV they have ever made. If the silence is too much for you, there is a Mark Levinson sound system with 21 speakers that probably sounds like a private concert hall inside the cabin.

The seats are where things get really serious for an electric car. For the first time in a Lexus SUV, the front passenger and the middle row seats have power footrests. These seats also have fans to keep you cool on hot days. If you miss the sound of a gas engine, Lexus added a feature called Active Sound Control. It makes noises that sound like a regular car shifting gears. Trying to act like something it is not is a first for Lexus, but some drivers might find it fun to hear something other than electric humming.

The 2027 Lexus TZ is 16.7 ft long and 6.53 ft wide. It stands 5.6 ft tall. The distance between the front and back wheels is 10.01 ft. This size makes it almost exactly the same as the Volvo EX90. It is a large car that will take up a good amount of space in a garage. Because it is so big, there is plenty of room for three rows of people to sit comfortably without bumping knees.

When it comes to carrying gear, the TZ has 0.39 cubic meters of space behind the third row of seats. That is not a huge amount, but you can fold the second and third rows flat into the floor with the touch of a button. This creates a big, flat area for hauling large boxes. However, there is one strange thing about this car – it does not have a front trunk, or a “frunk.” Most electric cars use the space where an engine used to be for extra storage, but Lexus left that space empty or blocked it off.

Charging the Lexus TZ is fairly simple but not too fast. It can use charging stations that provide up to 150 kW of power. This allows the battery to go from 10 percent to 80 percent in a leisurely 35 minutes. One great feature is the new NACS port. This means Lexus owners can use Tesla Superchargers without needing a special adapter. It also has a unique 2-in-1 port that puts two different types of plugs side by side. This should make it much easier to plug in at different types of charging stations when you are away from home.

Safety is always a big deal for family EVs. The TZ comes with the Lexus Safety System+ 4.0. This includes tools that help the driver stay in their lane and stop the car if it thinks a crash might happen. It can even spot people walking near the car and help the driver steer away from danger. As for the price, Lexus has not given a final number yet, but we think it will start well over £44,000 when it arrives in the US. That makes it much cheaper than the Lucid Gravity but very close to the Hyundai IONIQ 9. It will officially go on sale near the end of 2026.

A heavily camouflaged prototype of an electric Bentley SUV has been spotted. It was seen undergoing testing at Nürburgring.

This is easily the clearest look yet of the upcoming EV, which will sit below the Bentley Bentayga in the brand’s lineup. Despite heavy disguise, we can see the proportions of the electric SUV. Smaller, yes, but not small by any stretch. Expect a length of nearly five metres. The stance is tighter, the silhouette feels sleeker, and it looks more agile than the Bentayga.

Reports suggest that Bentley’s first electric SUV will ride on the dedicated PPE platform. That means no combustion engine compatibility. Just a clean electric architecture designed purely for performance and efficiency.

Giving power to the electric Bentley SUV would be a dual-motor AWD setup. We wouldn’t be surprised to see a 4-figure power output. Also expected is some seriously fast charging capability.

Lexus, Toyota’s luxury sub-brand, posted a teaser ahead of its event on May 7, 10:30 AM JST. The teaser picture shows a silhouette of a large SUV, which is most likely the Lexus TZ, which first appeared in the news cycle back in 2023.

Of course, we can’t know for sure, but the timing seems very fitting. Toyota announced in February its fully-electric, three-row Highlander SUV, on which the Lexus TZ will be based. The two SUVs will share the modified TNGA-K platform, which Toyota says is optimized for interior space and efficiency.

A Lexus TZ prototype has already been spotted on the streets of Europe, which suggests a late 2026 or an early 2027 launch time frame. And even with its camouflage, it’s obvious that the design will differ slightly from the Toyota Highlander EV.

The Beijing Auto Show is always full of surprises, but this year, a giant took the stage. XPeng has officially pulled the covers off its newest flagship SUV, the XPeng GX. This big vehicle is designed to be the best of the best for the Chinese company. With a starting price of RMB 399,800, which is about £42,200, it is not a cheap family runaround, but it offers a lot of features that usually cost much more in other electric cars. This six-seater has more computer power than many professional workstations. XPeng wants to prove that its cars can be as luxurious and advanced as the top-shelf offerings from famous luxury brands from Europe.

When you first look at the XPeng GX from a distance, you might think you are seeing a Range Rover. It has a similar boxy, strong look that many luxury buyers love. But the GX is actually longer than the British classic. It measures 207.3 inches from front to back. The wheelbase is a roomy 122.6 inches. But even though it is a giant SUV, it moves through the air very easily. It has a drag coefficient of 0.255 – better than many small, sleek cars. It sits on large 22-inch wheels that help it stand tall and look expensive.

Inside the car, the space is the real star. Most SUVs with three rows of seats feel like a cardboard box in the very back. The XPeng GX uses a layout with two seats in each of the three rows. The doors close themselves softly, so you never have to worry about slamming them. XPeng says this is a car built for families and it isn’t wrong. The trunk is big enough to hold six large suitcases, even when every seat is full. There is a fridge that stays quiet while it keeps your drinks cold. The front passenger seat can even lean back 180 degrees for a nap. If you want some privacy, the glass can dim itself using AI technology.

There are two versions of the new GX available – the first is a pure electric option. This model uses an 800V system that allows for very fast charging. XPeng calls this 5C supercharging. On a full charge, this version can travel 466 miles. It uses two electric motors for all-wheel drive to make sure it has plenty of grip on the road. This makes it one of the long-distance leaders among modern EVs.

The second version is an extended-range EV. This model can go 267 miles using just its battery. It also has a small gas engine that acts like a generator, and when you use both, the total range jumps to 985 miles. That is a serious distance for any vehicle. You could drive for days without needing to stop for fuel or a charge. Like the pure electric version, this one also comes with all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

XPeng calls the GX its first “robotaxi-ready” car – it has the hardware to drive itself in the future. It uses four special AI chips designed by XPeng. These chips are very powerful and can think much faster than a human. To help the car steer, XPeng worked with Bosch to build a steer-by-wire system. This means there is no metal rod connecting the steering wheel to the tires. Instead, the car uses wires and computers to tell the wheels which way to turn. This allows the AI to steer faster and with more precision.

Safety is another area where XPeng is showing off its strengths. The company says the XPeng GX has “aviation-grade” safety – it has backup systems for everything, just like a commercial airplane. If one system for steering or braking fails, there are five more layers of backup to keep you safe. The car can also stop itself automatically if it sees a crash coming. It can do this at speeds up to 93 mph. It even works on ice and snow, which is usually very hard for computers to handle.

But this is not the first time XPeng has tried to sell a luxury car. They tried it once before with the G9, but it did not go very well. Now, the GX has to fight against other popular Chinese EVs like the Li Auto L9 and the NIO ES8. Pretty much anywhere in the world, a car with all these features for £42,200 would be an instant hit. But in China, the competition is so tough that some people think the price is a bit high.

If you want to spend a little more, you can get a special paint job called “Kunlun Cloud Realm.” This paint is put on in 15 different layers, with each layer 230 micrometers thick. This makes the car look like it was painted by hand by an artist. It gives the GX a lustrous, deep look that you usually only see on cars that cost in excess of £150,000. XPeng is trying very hard to make sure this SUV feels like a true luxury product from top to bottom.

XPeng is changing from a car company into an AI mobility company. They are already making robots, eVTOL aircraft and are working on robot taxis. The XPeng GX is a big part of this new plan. If the self-driving technology works as well as they promise, the high price might be worth it. People might be willing to pay more for a car that can handle the boring parts of driving for them. For now, the cars are already arriving at stores in China.
